Day 3 - Ruderi di Gibellina, Sicily
Back in 1968 a massive serious of earthquakes destroyed several towns in the south western Sicily. Gibellina is one of two of the towns we visited that suffered complete destruction. The town was rebuilt 10 years later and 7 miles away as Gibellina Nuova, but the old town was transformed into a massive concrete edifice to commemorate the dead and serve as a public art piece to celebrate the town's rebirth. Concrete covers the destroyed old town, and cuts throughout retain the previous placement of buildings and streets. It was breathtaking to see the amount of effort that went into this unique undertaking to transform the rubble and destitution into a gigantic public work of art.
